Plus one last winter celebration and tons of events for Women’s Day (and month)
There’s a yarn festival happening this month, but it won’t be as boring as you think. That goes for August as a whole. Spring is sprinting its way towards us, so the wildflowers are blooming, but there’s still time to celebrate the good things about the chilly season with a Winterfest in Granger Bay.
In Calvinia, they’re not waiting for September to celebrate braai day and Stellies is putting on a music festival with big local acts and an even bigger beer garden.
What we’re trying to say is, August is packed with things to do, so get out there.
BIG NAMES, BIG STAGE AND ... THE BIGGEST BEER GARDEN?
2–3 August
One stage and 16 of South Africa’s biggest musical acts. See the likes of Fokofpolisiekar, Jack Parow, Youngsta CPT, Majozi and a host of others in Stellenbosch. Add to that what the organisers claim is the biggest beer garden any festival has seen, and you have the basic premise for one of the fastest growing festivals in the country: Rocking Stellies.
Cost: R99 general tickets

ONE LAST WINTER CELEBRATION
3 August
Event organisers So Happy are throwing a winter festival to end it all for 2019. They’re going big with trapeze artists, contortionists, mystery games and a three-course lunch. Entertainment will be provided by popular DJ duo Pascal and Pearce, dress up is encouraged and 10% of all tickets sold goes towards the Smile Foundation when you book to go to the So Happy Winter Wonderland 2019.
Cost: R250 (Regular), R350 (Late), R10 000 (VIP Pearl Package), R15 000 (VIP Crystal Package)

IT’S YARN, NOT YAWN
9 August
See yarn (or wool, as it’s also known) in a new light as it’s showcased by the country’s top indie dyers, fibre producers, knitters and crocheters. There’ll also be lucky draws, demonstrations and workshops, plus you can show off your own handmade garments at Cape Town’s first Yarn Festival.
Cost: R50

CHOCOHOLIC DREAMLAND
31 August
For the kids there’s a movie lounge, facepainting and games. For the adults there’s live music, gin, bubbly and craft beer. For everyone there’s chocolate fountains, ice-cream marshmallows, brownies and just about any chocolate treat you can imagine. It may have moved to a new venue at the Woodmill, but it’s still the same, addictive and amazing Chocolate Festival.
Cost: R50–R180 via Webtickets.

PREPARE FOR MEAT SWEATS
30 August
since the best lamb cuts come from Calvinia, it's fitting that they’re celebrating this at the end of August with a massive annual meat festival. Think braais, fresh meat, a lamb chop eating competition and live music. There’s also kids’ entertainment, including a jumping castle, and a strongman competition to make that chop worthwhile at the Hantam Vleisfees.
Cost: Friday - R30 (kids), R70 (adults). Saturday - R60 (kids), R120 (adults)

PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE
August–May
Last season Cape Town City finished a respectable 4th in the PSL. Come 3 August, they’ll be starting another campaign with ambitions of improving on last season. Follow them when they take on the rest of South Africa’s top football clubs at the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point. We’ll have match details, ticket prices and more whenever they have a home game. Subscribe to our newsletter and follow our social media for more details.
Cost: Tickets range from R60/p to R150/p and are available online at Computicket.com and all Computicket outlets.
KEEPING IT KLASSIQUE
8-11 August
A treat for the ears and a feast for the eyes, this 11-year-old festival includes Karoo-inspired art exhibitions and fine, hearty regional cuisine with its main offering of high quality classical music. Expect recitals from the likes of Trio Du Cap Classique, Sulayman Human, Marimba Melodies as well as shows such as the ATKV Heritage Concert and sublime string quartet from Bohemia at the Klein Karoo Klassique.
Cost: The festival is offering a special package where you can see all 9 recitals for R950 (save R240)
